About UCL Special CollectionsUCL Special Collections is part of UCL’s Library Services and we take care of rare books, manuscripts and archives.  It is one of the largest Special Collections in the South of England, holding over 600,000 items.The collection includes fine examples of medieval manuscripts, early printed books, significant holdings of 18th century works and highly important 19th and 20th century collections of personal papers, archival material, and literature.We work with schools (mainly in Camden and the neighbouring boroughs of the Olympic Park) to use our unique collection to provide enriching experiences and resources for pupils and teachers - whatever their subject area or curriculum focus, completely free of charge.About First StoryFirst Story changes lives through writing.We believe that writing can transform lives, and that there is dignity and power in every young person’s story.First Story brings talented, professional writers into secondary schools serving low-income communities to work with students and teachers to foster creativity and communication skills.By helping students find their voices through intensive, fun programmes, First Story raises aspirations and gives students the skills and confidence to achieve them.We are currently running residencies in 67 schools across the UK.

Join <A HREF="https://www.firststory.org.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">First Story</A> and <A HREF="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/special-collections" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">UCL Special Collections</A> for a unique evening of creative writing inspired by rare pieces from the university's archive. Led by novelist and short story writer, Rachel Seiffert, the event aims to give English teachers the tools to create effective writing workshops using objects as prompts - practical ways to inspire both descriptive and narrative writing at KS3 & 4. A resource pack will be provided at the end of the session with workshop ideas to use in the classroom.
The event will be held in the Haldane Room, Wilkins Building (main building) of UCL and refreshments will be provided on arrival.

About Rachel Seiffert<A HREF="http://www.rachelseiffert.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> </A>
<A HREF="http://www.rachelseiffert.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rachel Seiffert </A>is one of Virago’s most critically acclaimed contemporary novelists. Her first book, The Dark Room, (2001) was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and made into the feature film Lore. In 2003, she was named one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists, and in 2011 she received the EM Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Field Study, her collection of short stories published in 2004, received an award from PEN International. Her second novel, Afterwards (2007) third novel The Walk Home (2014), and fourth novel A Boy in Winter (2017), were all longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction. Her books have been published in eighteen languages.
