Overview
The Employment Rights Act 1996, IR35 and more recently the Employment Rights Bill can make determining the status of someone working for you tricky. Are they employed or self-employed? An employee or a worker? What rights do they have?
In this session we will explore the key differences between the main ways of engaging people for work, self-employment commonly known as contractors, consultants or freelancers, casual or zero-hour workers and employees.
We will address the main rights afforded to each category and provide practical insights into determining the correct status and spotting potential pit falls. This will include:
The main traits of an employment relationship, a worker and someone who is self-employed.
What documentation is required for each type of engagement.
What are the main differences in rights between the three categories.
The long-term considerations of each type of engagement including the new right for workers to be offered fixed hours.
