Crash and Learn with Fintech Founders by Deloitte
In the uncharted world of FinTech start-ups, the keys to success can be hard to find. But wouldn’t it be nice if you could be forewarned to understand how to best navigate the necessary evils and pitfalls of building a business?
Crash and Learn is back with your next opportunity to hear from successful FinTech founders about how they’ve approached, negotiated and hurdled the regulatory barriers. Specifically, our speakers (listed below) will share their stories and give advice on how to:
- Engage regulators at the outset
- Build buy-in from regulatory personnel
- Make regulation an opportunity rather than a barrier
Register using the green button to join us (and a stack of pizza boxes) in Deloitte’s new FinTech space at WeWork Waterhouse Square (but please only do so if you can definitely attend, as space is limited).
Pizza, beer, wine, soft drinks and great chat provided.
Speakers:
Freddy Macnamara, CEO, Cuvva
Started in February 2014, Cuvva is set to cut premiums dramatically for low-mileage users. Founder Freddy Macnamara came up with the idea of paying for car insurance by the hour, while discussing lending his car to a friend. He said: “It was ridiculous that I couldn’t borrow a car for an hour, because of the difficulty of getting short-term cover. I could order an Uber or a Deliveroo to my house, but I couldn’t buy insurance for a short period quickly. We realised that we could use the same mechanism to save infrequent drivers a huge amount of money. Saving £500 to £1,000 a year on your car insurance is life-changing. Everyone can think of someone who will benefit from that.”
Will Beeson, Head of Operations and Innovation, CivilisedBank
As Head of Operations & Innovation of CivilisedBank, Will has a keen interest in innovation in the banking and fintech sectors. During his nine years in both established and early stage financial services companies, Will has developed deep insight into technical and operational challenges as well as changing customer behaviour and needs.
After starting his career as an analyst at Citigroup in New York, he spent seven years in Rome, Italy advising and managing Italian financial services companies through the 2008 financial crisis and the subsequent European sovereign crisis.
Most recently, Will managed the turnaround of a distressed Italian consumer lending company, including overseeing the strategy to restructure the company into a peer-to-peer lender.
He is an active member of the London fintech & startup community, serving as a startup advisor at StartupBootcamp Fintech, a London-based fintech accelerator, and an advocate at Tech London Advocates, an industry organisation promoting London as a global tech innovation capital.
Will is a writer and frequent speaker at banking and fintech conferences on innovation and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Digital Banking. He holds a BA from Amherst College (USA) and is a CFA Charterholder.
Suchitra Nair, Director, Deloitte
Suchitra is part of Deloitte’s UK Fintech leadership team. She is closely involved in Deloitte’s engagement with regulators both in the UK and at an EU level. Her quest for both learning something new and solving a problem in a simple way has been the key reason why she has got close to Fintech world – they deliver on both counts!
