The Coronavirus pandemic forced businesses to act quickly and adapt to remote working in order to survive, in most cases for the first time. 6 months later, and remote working has become the new normal.

According to the UK State of Working Report 2020:

  • 84% of UK full-time workers are planning on continuing to work remotely in some form.
  • 41% would be likely to resign if they were forced to return to the office.
  • 45% of workers are willing to take a pay cut to continue working from home.

If businesses can adapt to this new way of working, the benefits of remote working are far more than an improved bottom line:

  • Better Work Life Balance. Employees have better work life balance, meaning you can hire and retain the best employees.
  • Better Access for Disabilities. Greater flexibility in the workplace undoubtedly gives greater access for all kinds of people.
  • Limits Illness. Spending less time in the office means less chance of spreading illnesses.
  • Reduces Time Wastage. With more people working from home, or travelling at off-peak times due to flexible hours, this will limit the amount of time, and money, wasted.
  • Greater Standards and Productivity. Employees work from home slightly differently; they have far higher standards and fewer distractions or interruptions.

However, adjusting to this new normal brings it’s own challenges. The Mental Health at Work 2020 Report, found:

  • 41% of employees have experienced mental health symptoms caused, or worsened, by work this year
  • 51% of poor mental health caused by work this year was due to pressure
  • 30% of employees are not telling anyone of their mental health issues.

So, adapting to this new way of working is far more than just improved cyber security.
