Creating a Visual Journal (Sketchbook)

A wonderful, expressive workshop of exploring how to create a stunning visual journal and how to use your sketchbook to record thought provoking memories, focusing on learning and experimenting with different skills and techniques.

About this event

An introduction on how to create and enjoy using a sketchbook to create a thought-provoking visual journal led by Yorkshire artist and designer Justine Hardisty.

Join artist and designer Justine Hardisty for a workshop of exploring a wide range of ideas of what to include in your own unique visual journal within the pages of a sketchbook. Justine will guide you through step-by-step tips that will make your sketchbook a wonderful record, not only of your artistic journey but your thoughts, events, and observations in life that you can look back upon over time. Throughout the day you will learn valuable skills and techniques on ideas of what to include and how to enjoy your visual journey sketchbook that we would love you continue to develop at home!

You will learn that to get the most out of your visual journal we suggest adding something to your sketchbook often. That may be recording a thought, idea or inspirational quote or merely sticking in a ticket or something you have found appealing. Sketchbooks are amazing tools for experimentation and interpretation as they allow you to practise skills and techniques using a wide range of media, tools and resources. You will find that creating a visual journal in a sketchbook is relaxing, rewarding and promotes good mental health and mindfulness when you become immersed within its pages. They enable you to create a wonderful visual record of events, places, likes and life experiences through imagery, words, colour, pattern as well as the special things that you collect and attach.

Your sketchbook will become your constant companion and used for everything. You can doodle and sketch from observation or imagination, create patterns or practise lettering as well as paste in your favourite things. You can do anything- and- everything to make your unique visual journal personal and useful to you-the possibilities are endless!

In this introductory workshop Justine will use her 40 years’ experience of being an artist and designer to immerse you into the world of visual journaling in a sketchbook through expression, interpretation and experimentation using a range of materials, media, skills and techniques.

The workshop will involve:

• Introduction into the composition of a visual journal in a sketchbook

• Looking at what to include and how to personalise it

• Learning how to be explorative, expressive and take risks with mark making

• Learning and experimenting with techniques, skills, materials and media

• Understanding how to build a unique visual journal page by page to make it a useful and enjoyable companion

• You will receive a handout detailing the content of the workshop on how to create and use a sketchbook

Skill level:

Beginner- no painting or drawing experience necessary.

Cost: £50 per person – all art materials and equipment use included.

*Please note: As sketchbooks are very personal to everyone, we ask that you provide your own for the workshop. Which one you choose will very much depend on the materials you plan to use inside. For example, if you know you will be wanting to experiment with watercolours you will need a sketchbook that has thicker pages. Also, as your sketchbook will be your constant companion, we suggest that you purchase one of a size that is portable.

The Craft House was established in 2016 in Saltaire by April Chamberlain, who continues to manage the business. Having started in Saltaire, The Craft House is now run from new, larger, premises at 109-111 Main Street, Bingley. We have a lovely ground floor cafe and welcoming workshop spaces on the first floor (reached by stairs with two handrails). We offer a vibrant programme of art, craft and textile workshops and courses for adults, enabling you to develop existing skills as well as try new activities. Working closely with a team of talented artist/maker tutors, we provide expertly-run classes in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We cater for a range of skill levels, from first-time participants to people with existing skills (including other professional artists and makers looking to develop their techniques). Our emphasis is on encouraging creativity and enjoyment whilst passing on key skills. We also cater for private parties and events - please telephone us or call into the cafe to discuss. Please note that all our events are subject to us achieving minimum booking requirements, as we need to ensure they are commercially viable for our tutors - if we have to cancel an event, we will refund your ticket and give you as much notice as possible.
