About this event
We're restarting our online events, and what better place to begin than to explore what makes an autistic space safe? As an autistic-led organisation who aim to build autistic community through our various peer support and activity-based groups, we were excited to read this new booklet: Creating Safe Spaces for Autistic People by Laura Hellfeld and Scott Neilson (authors of Gabby’s Glimmers)
Laura and Scott will be joining us for an interview about their thoughts and ideas around creating these safe spaces. If you are an autistic person looking for a safe space, or a community worker, educator, healthcare professional or anyone else looking to provide inclusive spaces for autistic people, this is the event for you!
Laura is a neurodivergent health educator, independent Nurse & Sleep Consultant, and Associate Editor of Autistic Revolution magazine, specialising in supporting neurodivergent and disabled community members. They are particularly keen to support others in areas of self-care like eating, sleep and hygiene and also in understanding their healthcare needs.
Scott is an Autistic Trainer, Mentor & Consultant based in Scotland. They have several years of experience supporting Autistic people, in addition to delivering a variety of training sessions and presenting at conferences. Additionally, they work with organisations such as AUsome Training and GROVE Neurodivergent Mentoring & Education. Scott also holds a Postgraduate certificate in Autism.
They said:
The book aims to “help services be truly more inclusive of (autistic) community members” and provides a clear outline of the “key principles, values and approaches that can cultivate a safe Autistic space.”
“The guide is for both identifying and non-identifying autistic people to help support developing their groups across a range of settings & activities... It is also relevant for schools, universities, healthcare services & therapists who are looking to make a safe space for Autistics.”
It's important to us to be able to welcome people regardless of financial means however we have significant running costs, so we ask for a minimum of £2.00 but suggested donation £6.00 or more.
