Working with terracotta clay we will shape thumb pots and quickly move into a synchronised exploration of Richard Serra’s verb list for makers. This is a very hands-on workshop mingling making with language and builds on work I began with midwifery students on the concepts of holding and containing last year. Come along and fold, press, turn, sweep, stir and squash!

Angela Maddock is Maker in Residence with the Faculty. She also works as a visiting tutor at the Royal College of Art, is an Honorary Research Fellow at Swansea College of Art and contributes to Clinical Humanities teaching in Medicine at King’s. She was recipient of the Craft Council’s Parallel Practices Award with our faculty and recently led women of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust in celebrating pioneering women in healthcare, their banner ‘RESPECT’ featured in Processions 2018, and is currently on tour.

Creative Breaks: making time for creativity in the working day has been developed by Sue Woodward, Angela Maddock and Jenny Oates. It is a well being project supported by King’s Cultural Institute. The project involves weekly hour-long arts-based lunchtime creative breaks over twelve weeks in 2018 for nursing and midwifery faculty staff and students Faculty members are invited to take part in a creative break based on the themes of ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: Keep moving, Invest in Relationships, Never stop Learning, Give to others, Savour the moment. The project will finish on 10 December with three separate extended workshops.

These workshops are only for the staff and students of the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, King’s College London.
