Overview

One-to-one creative writing coaching with author Iain McKinnon. Get detailed close-reading feedback or a focused brainstorming session.

Do you want to be an author — or improve the writing you’re already doing?

These one-to-one coaching sessions are designed to help you move forward with clarity and confidence, whether you’re working on an English composition, a short story, or your first novel. Sessions can be used in two main ways:

Option A: Close-read feedback

Send a short piece of writing in advance and I’ll do a close read—looking at what’s working, what’s getting in the way, and what to try next. In the session we’ll go through practical, specific improvements you can apply immediately.

  • Up to 1,000 words maximum
  • Send the work a minimum of 3 days before the session
  • Focus on craft: clarity, voice, structure, pacing, character, dialogue, impact

Option B: Brainstorming + problem-solving

Stuck on plot? Unsure what your character wants? Can’t find the shape of the story? Use the session as a structured brainstorm to break the block and build a workable plan.

  • Plot and structure support
  • Character motivation and conflict
  • Scene planning and momentum
  • Theme and tone decisions

About your coach

Iain McKinnon is the author of five published novels, with a Master’s degree in Creative Writing, a degree in Psychology, and years of experience as a business trainer. Expect a supportive session with clear, actionable guidance.

Important note

Please be aware: this is coaching, not an editing service. You’ll receive guidance, feedback, and strategies to strengthen your writing—so you can develop the skill and apply it across your work.
