A series of one hour workshops about the elements, inviting you to explore our shared understanding of these vital forces and how we can use them in creative writing.EarthWe’ll begin this series of four workshops by getting grounded. Earth nurtures the real world, but often in fiction caves and underground spaces are portals to other realms. In science fiction the literal Earth is sometimes a long-forgotten mythical home world. Gardeners coax life from the earth; it’s a substance with a strong and irresistible smell, so we’ll spend some time exploring describing earth through this usually under-used sense.And in the following weeks:AirWe breathe it, like Icarus we can fall to our deaths through it, we can feel flattened by a winter storm or sun-kissed by a summer breeze. We can’t see it, but can feel air moving around us all the time. Achieving our desires can make us feel lighter than air. But suffocation can kill us faster than almost anything else, and the body itself can deny us air through panic or anxiety attacks. Stars burn, so do secret messages, love letters, photographs. A contradictory element, fire can mean warmth and comfort or absolute destruction.
