7 September – Beat Writer’s Block
Do you want to write but don’t know where to start? Have you started a project but are now stuck and need an impetus to continue? This informal workshop will provide enjoyable and productive writing exercises to stimulate your imagination and get you back on track. It will encourage you to ‘play’ with ideas and discover your creative focus. Whether you want to write fiction or non-fiction, we will look at the elements that make a good story, and how to transform ideas into words. All levels are welcome.

5 October – Create Engaging Characters
Every tale needs great characters! They capture our interest – and sometimes our hearts – and the story revolves around them. This workshop will investigate what makes compelling characters and how we can use our own observation and imagination to bring them to life on the page. While this is particularly true of fiction, it also applies if you’re writing a memoir or family history. All levels are welcome.

9 November 2019 - Finding the Plot
Do you have a story, or just a situation? Have you created character sketches and don’t know what to do with them? In every story, something must happen to someone, but getting started and keeping up the momentum is easier said than done! This workshop will investigate how to write a character’s physical and emotional journey, highlighting their dreams, triumphs, challenges and obstacles along the way

The programme runs from 10am to 2.30pm and includes a light lunch as well as morning coffee. Cost: £45 per person.

Claire Thurlow is a writer and writing coach who is passionate about helping people who have an urge to write. She has an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Sussex and is an experienced workshop facilitator, editor and published author. What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?
Parking for Chawton House is available at the bottom of the driveway. Drive through Chawton village, follow the signs for Chawton House and keep going until you reach the dead end car park at the end of the road. The house is a 5 minute walk up-hill from the car park.
There are accessible parking spaces behind the house for those with mobility issues.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
We will check your name off a guestlist so please save paper and do not print your tickets!
