Creatuive Writing Workshop - Getting Started

Creatuive Writing Workshop - Getting Started

The Highland BookshopFort William, Highlands
Tuesday, Jan 20 from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm GMT
Overview

The perfect session for ‘new’ writers, and for writers looking to kick start their writing practice in the new year.

Session 1 - Getting Started (Again)

The first session of our year of writing is concerned with getting past the blank page. At the same time as starting to help you tap into just what it is that you actually want to write (and want to get out of writing), the workshop will feature the kind of writing exercises that will help you get words on the page. Consideration will then be given to how you start to turn these jottings into more complete pieces of work.

A Year of Writing

After some successful creative writing evening classes in 2024, local writer Stephen Carruthers returns, in association with the Highland Bookshop, to host a series of workshops designed at keeping you writing all year long.

Each quarter will feature a pair of workshops, taught both by Stephen and some featured guest writers, in the pleasant surroundings of the Highland Bookshop. The workshops will tie in with the seasons, covering a range of both types of writing and approaches to writing, with the aim of inspiring both new writers and established writers with exercises and activities that encourage them out of their comfort zone. The activities can be used as a springboard, both to help keep writer’s block at bay and to establish good habits and achievable writing targets that will help keep you writing even when it is a bit of a struggle.

Come along and see what trying to write alongside supportive tutors and fellow student writers can do for your writing confidence.

Attend at least six out of eight of the main sessions, and submit two pieces of writing for feedback, and you will receive a certificate from the Highland Bookshop in association with the Imagined Spaces writing project, that details what you have achieved.

In addition, we plan to host some standalone sessions focused on particular genres. If YOU have a type of writing you would like to see featured, then drop us a line.

General Overview

  • Each sessions run from 7-9.30pm with a break for tea, coffee or soft drink half way through.
  • While each individual session will be useful in its own right, there will also be a benefit to attending a number of, or indeed all eight sessions over the course of the year. Workshops will build upon ideas and activities from earlier sessions as you look to establish a regular writing practice.
  • People who attend several workshops will be invited to submit a piece of writing half way through the year, and again at the end of the year, in order to get some feedback. While this is not compulsory in order to attend, those who do submit will receive a certificate at the end of the year to show they have completed the course.
  • The first session is full price but if you return for multiple you'll receive a code for 25% off the next event when you book.
