Come and join the Countryside Rangers for a pond dipping workshop at the Den of Maidencraig Local Nature Reserve.

Creatures of the Wetland at Den of Maidencraig LNR

Join the Countryside Rangers and explore the amazing world of ponds. During the session, we will use pond nets to search the pond for all manner of aquatic creatures.

Our activities will focus on:

  • Wildlife ID: we will search for and identify the creatures that live inside ponds. There is potential to find find fish, worms, aquatic insects and other minibeasts. We may also spot species such as moorhen and grey heron.
  • Ecology of pond animals: learn about the behaviours and quirks displayed by common pond creatures. Learn why the backswimmer swims upside down and discover how sticklebacks defend themselves from predators.

What to Bring:

  • Suitable outdoor clothing
  • Sturdy, waterproof footwear. Wellington boots are strongly encouraged.
