Keywords in Technology and Society is the 2021 Speaker Series for the University of Surrey’s cutting-edge research theme – Technology and Society. Through numerous editions in 2021, we will bring to you highlights of Surrey research across our three faculties, and 2 editions hosting external experts. Each of the editions will focus us on one key word in technology and society – and we look forward to having you join us!

The University of Surrey’s strategic research theme Technology and Society – welcomes you to the fourth of its series Keywords in Technology and Society on Wednesday 5 May, at 2pm. This event – titled CRIME – brings together three speakers from three diverse areas of the sciences and social sciences – to think about societal consequences of emerging technologies. The event includes some excellent talks on – online hate, romance fraud and cyberconflict.

Prof Nishanth Sastry, Distributed and Networked Systems Group, Surrey Centre for Cyber Security, Department of Computer Science. Nishanth will speak about “Can we agree on online hate? Lessons from Citizens-MP conversations on Twitter”

Dr Emily Finch, School of Law. Emily will speak about “He stole all my money and broke my heart and I don’t know which one has destroyed me the most”. The challenges of combatting online romance fraud.

Dr Michael McGuire, Surrey Centre for Cyber Security, Department of Sociology. Mike will speak about “When Worlds Collide: Nation States, Cyberconflict and the Politics of Crime”

The event will be chaired by Dr Suparna De.

Speakers Biographies:

Emily Finch - Dr Finch is a criminologist and criminal lawyer with extensive experience in criminological research. Her first book The Criminalisation of Stalking won a Cavendish Book Prize in 2001. Since then, she has published extensively in the areas of stalking, drug-assisted rape and identity fraud. Her research on stalking has been influential in influencing policy-makers both on a domestic and international level (Scottish Executive Stalking and Harassment in Scotland).

Mike McGuire - Dr Michael McGuire joined the Department as Senior Lecturer in Criminology in September 2012. Dr McGuire read Philosophy & Scientific method at the London School of Economics where he acquired a first class BSc Econ and he completed his PhD, at Kings College London. He has subsequently developed an international profile in the study of technology and the justice system and has published widely in these areas.

Nishanth Sastry - Co-Lead of the Distributed and Networked Systems Group in the Department of Computer Science, University of Surrey. He is also a Visiting Researcher at the Alan Turing Institute, where he is a co-lead of the Social Data Science Special Interest Group. Nishanth's work focuses on the structures and architectures used for disseminating and consuming content online.

Suparna De - Dr. Suparna De is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and Networks at the Dept. of Digital Technologies at the University of Winchester. She is an Associate Editor of the Elsevier High-Confidence Computing and International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks journals. Prior to joining the University of Winchester in 2019, she was a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Communication Systems (ICS), University of Surrey, UK. She obtained her Ph.D. and MSc. (with distinction) degrees in Electronic Engineering from the University of Surrey.
