CSCS Network: How to crowdsource behavioural data in the social sciences

This new network will to connect colleagues across schools and disciplines with an interest or involvement in Citizen Science, the Crowdsourcing of evidence, and participation in scientific, medical, humanities and policy research: everything from identifying galaxies, proteins or archeological sites, through collecting images, environmental data, data on energy use or personal health, to input to policy, planning or innovation. DESCRIPTION
Experiments with human participants are increasingly being conducted using online crowdsourcing platforms – the most well known being Amazon’s Mechanical Turk. These platforms allow you to reach a large population of participants and conduct experiments much faster than is possible in the lab. In this workshop, we'll give an overview of how to design and upload online experiments to the Mechanical Turk and CrowdFlower platforms. We’ll look at options for creating an experiment, and we’ll also discuss the practical and ethical considerations you should take into account. In small groups, you'll have the chance to modify a classic psychological experiment on subitizing and collect results from online participants in real time. No programming experience is necessary but might be beneficial. The workshop will be ideal for people who have previously run experiments in the lab and would now like to take advantage of online platforms. It is aimed at social scientists who do experimental work (in e.g. Economics, Linguistics, Psychology, etc.). BIOS
Jon Carr and Jasmeen Kanwal are PhD students in the Centre for Language Evolution. They have been running online experiments in which participants have to learn and communicate with each other using artificial languages. Jon is interested in how the tradeoffs involved in communicating and learning give rise to optimally structured languages. Jasmeen is interested in how communicative pressures shape universal linguistic structures. She also has interests in the evolution of the particular phonetic, phonological, and morphological systems of various languages.
