This session is aimed at Educators only. Research from this year’s National Youth Trends report ‘The Social Snapshot’ shows that 40% of young people agreed (to at least some extent) that they would want to live in a world without social media. Would you?Lockdown accelerated our transition into the virtual world; more than ever before, our lives were pushed online - from work, to education, to leisure. And, although lockdown has lifted, many of us are left with the residual effects of long-term screen time. In fact, much of our lives have stayed online.The link between too much screen time and our mental health is well documented. You know it. We know it. And Gen Z know it. But, how do educators feel? It must be tough; regulating your own wellbeing whilst supporting your students. Ross McGill - known online as @TeacherTookit’ - is known as the ‘most followed educator on social media in the UK’. In this session, Ross brings his wealth of knowledge and expertise in the education sector - in addition to his lived experience - to provide educators with guidance on how to navigate when online comes into the classroom.When talking about his inspiration for this session, Ross said:<blockquote>‘When I conducted my Just Great Teaching research (2019), without question, the section on student AND teacher mental health was the toughest to complete. Teachers are not mental health practitioners; we need significant funding from the government in order to support students’ needs. This seems unlikely when specialist support is unaffordable, teacher salaries and teacher recruitment issues are a constant challenge. Nevertheless, I believe that we as educators can still play a role in facilitating open dialogue around mental health, recognising the signs a student might be struggling and helping them to access the support they need.
