The editor of the Financial Times Roula Khalaf will give the 2022 Hugh Cudlipp Lecture.

It will be the first time the lecture has been given since the Covid lockdowns. The lecture will take place at the Royal Over-Seas League at Six Park Place, St James's London SW1A 1LR on Wednesday 4 May from 7pm.

The annual Cudlipp Lecture was created and named in memory of the late Lord Cudlipp, the former editorial director of the Daily Mirror, a past President of the London Press Club and one of the pioneers of 20th century popular tabloid journalism. Hosted by the London Press Club and sponsored by the Daily Mirror and Cision Ltd, the lecture gives a platform for a high-profile media professional to address key developments and issues in today’s news business.

Previous lecturers have included: Robert Peston, George Osborne, James Harding, Kevin Maguire, James Naughtie, Emily Bell, David Walsh, Sir Harold Evans, Jon Snow, Lionel Barber, Alan Rusbridger, Rebekah Wade, Alastair Campbell, Paul Dacre, Andrew Marr, Lord Grade, Felicity Green, Piers Morgan, Geoffrey Goodman, Derek Jameson, Bob Edwards and Peter Carter Ruck.

Entries are now open for the Hugh Cudlipp Student Award 2022. The winner will be announced and receive cheque prize on the evening of the lecture.

London Press Club chairman Doug Wills, who is a Cudlipp Lecture trustee, said he was particularly delighted that such a high-calibre speaker as Roula Khalaf was giving this year’s lecture. “With a history of such eminent speakers the lecture would just not have been the same as a virtual event. We decided to wait until it could be an in-person event – as it always has been - and we expect a capacity audience.”

THE HUGH CUDLIPP STUDENT AWARD

Entries are now being accepted for the prestigious Hugh Cudlipp Award for Student Journalism.

The winner of the competition will be announced at the Hugh Cudlipp Lecture 2022.

The £1,500 prize, sponsored by The Daily Mirror, is given to a student who has made an outstanding contribution to journalism for an article, or series of articles, or video, exploring an issue of public interest or concern which, in the Cudlipp tradition, exemplifies lucid and graphic communication to a popular audience.

The winner will be decided by the a judging panel which is made up of members of the Cudlipp committee.

Submission guidelines for the Hugh Cudlipp Student Award 2022

Entries must have been published in print or on an online news site between Jan 2021 and February 2022.

The work cannot be part of assessed course work in a college newspaper/magazine.

The student must have graduated from or been enrolled at a UK university or college during 2021 or 2022.

Students need not be or have been studying Journalism or a media-related subject to apply.

Students are limited to one entry only and should submit a PDF or a link to the published work and confirmation of their student status/graduation to jolene.dearsley@reachplc.com.
