About this Event

For Cut Copy Remix, Black Hole Club in collaboration with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery invited Alis Oldfield, Mixed Milk, Rosa Francesca and Leanne O’Connor to explore the creative potential of Birmingham Museums Trust’s Digital Image Resource. Birmingham Museums Trust is the only collection in the UK that makes all of its out-of-copyright artworks available for free under a Creative Commons Zero License (CC0). The collection is one of the city’s greatest cultural assets and a priceless resource for learning, engagement and creativity. Over 3500 of these objects are now available as free digital images, with more being added every week.

Cut Copy Remix is an exhibition of the new work and ongoing research that responds to and reconfigures images from the Digital Image Resource. Shown across sites at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Vivid Projects, Mixed Milk’s film Excerpt crops selected details from the BMAG collection, re-sequencing and binding them by their commonalities. The work installed at Vivid Projects as a multi channel work with reworked audio. Rosa Francesca’s Unreal Histories presents works made with Generative Adversarial Networks using BMAG’s Digital Image Resource to generate artificial intelligence artworks. On closer inspection these works shed their initial connection to the way that we see the world and shows how a machine can create its own visual language. Alis Oldfield’s installation Rewilding ARP(L)ANET presents a landscape in which the internet lies in ruin, where relics of a sterile corporate network are slowly consumed by data-fragment dust. A site where virtual prototaxites take hold; a mycelial exchange and re-wilding. To connect with the properties of the archive both analogue and digital Leanne O’Connor works with the exhibition to present the workshop “Pick and Mix” developed from ongoing research into Birmingham School of Arts 35mm Slide Collection to question what is archival access now and what lies ahead for the analogue within collections?
