Cyanotype workshop

Hello, my name is Sally and I’m an artist who works with alternative photography and printmaking techniques. I create work using plants either documenting them and their growth at a particular time or extracting dyes from them to create art work.I am an experienced teacher with over ten years of teaching experience, having completed my PGCE in 2007 and then teaching art, design and media in mainstream education before becoming a head of department. I now work as a freelance teacher and artist.I currently deliver workshops that will introduce you to a technique so that when you leave you are confident to carry on using it when you get home. I also run drop-in taster workshops at festivals and markets that allow you to have a go at something.

Learn how to make cyanotypes, a Victorian photographic process which produces beautiful blue prints.

The Exchange

Come and learn how to make cyanotype prints in the inspiring surroundings of the Garden room at The Exchange. The cyanotype is a 19th century photographic process which uses chemicals that produce beautiful blue prints when exposed to sunlight. It was originally championed by Victorian botanist Anna Atkins to document plant specimens. During this two a half hour workshop you will be introduced to this wonderful technique and learn how to make your own prints using leaves and flowers. After an introduction to the process and its history you will be shown how to coat your own paper with cyanotype chemicals. Whilst this is drying you will have an opportunity to make some test prints before using the paper which you have hand coated to create a range of images using sunlight to expose your images and then water to develop them. There will be a half an hour break during the session. At the end of the two and a half hour session you will leave with a range of prints. You’ll also receive a handout recapping the process and detailing a list of suppliers and online resources. This workshop is only suitable for adults due to chemicals being used.This workshop will be led by Sally Gunnett, an artist who works with alternative photography and printmaking techniques. She has over ten years of teaching experience, having completed her PGCE in 2007 and then teaching art, design and media in mainstream education before becoming a head of department. Leaves and flowers will also be provided from the garden at the Exchange but you are free to bring your own items to create your image with.
