EnigmaThe Enigma was the first encryption device during WW2. It’s a German built machine that encrypted Nazi messages as they were transmitted via morse code.

BombeThis was the machine built by Alan Turing in 1939 and refined by Gordon Welshman in 1940 and was based on a previous machine built by the Polish, called the Bomba. It took the messages intercepted by Station X (Bletchley) and worked out the wheel settings on the Enigma. This allowed Bletchley to decrypt messages in that 24-hour window (wheel settings were changed every day). The number of permutations were significantly reduced because of three factors:1. A letter cannot be encrypted as itself2. The first message on a morning was a weather report3. Every message intercepted finished with the words “Heil Hitler"Important to note that although Alan Turing was the main driver behind this, Gordon Welshman was also a subsequent significant contributor.

Colossus

Colossus was the world’s first programmable digital computer built in 1943. Its task was to decipher messages intercepted that were sent between Hitler’s high command. There is a fully working rebuild of one of these in the museum. It was designed by Tommy Flowers who was a research engineer for the GPO (now BT) at Dollis Hill, and Bill Tutte who was the gentleman who worked out the operation of Lorenz despite never having seen one. They built the Colossus - their ability to crack the Lorenz code depended on a blunder by the German operator. Two virtually identical messages were sent without changing the wheel settings. The second message had abbreviated terms that had been sent in the first message. The guys used the differences in the two messages to work out how to defeat the encryption.

Lorenz

The Lorenz machine performed a similar function to Enigma but used much stronger encryption. Lorenz was used for Hitler’s high command. Again, messages were intercepted by Station X and it was their task to decrypt them.
