Using Data Science and AI to address Domestic Abuse and COVID-19 in Humanitarian Settings with Alice and Billy, AI for Good and AI for Good Simulator

Abstract

Data Science and AI have the potential to solve big societal problems. The challenge lies in identifying where to direct focus, to ensure that this powerful and yet very nascent technology is used to do good and actually drives lasting positive outcomes. In this Seminar, Alice and Billy from AI for Good UK are going to talk about how they used data science and AI to help address the needs of two particularly vulnerable groups: the people at risk of domestic abuse and violence, and refugees. They are going to present their work on rAInbow, the friendly chatbot designed to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for all those at risk of abuse to get help on this very private and sensitive matter. You are also going to hear about the COVID-19 Simulator for refugee camps and other humanitarian settings that they have built together with the AI for Good Community members. The Simulator is a web tool for NGOs, local authorities, and grassroots organizations to model the COVID-19 outbreak inside refugee camps and prepare timely and proportionate response measures needed to flatten the curve and reduce the number of fatalities. Join this session to learn about key challenges and findings from both projects: from the lack of data, colloquialisms to adapting and adjusting off-the-shelf solutions for better outcomes.

Alice Piterova, Managing Director of AI for Good

Alice is Managing Director of AI for Good, the social enterprise creating ethical, sustainable and scalable technologies for the most vulnerable and underserved. Alice has over 12 years of experience in business and product management, and a particular focus on such fields as tech for good, data privacy and machine learning. Prior to joining AI for Good, Alice was Head of Privacy at Hazy and coordinated the first cross-party parliamentary group on Artificial Intelligence (APPG AI) in the UK Parliament. Throughout her career, she was also involved with a number of non-profits such as Techfugees, Reprieve, Amnesty International, and the National Foundation for Educational Research.

Billy Zhao, Co-founder of the AI for Good Simulator project, and Data Scientists at Education First

Billy is Co-founder of the AI for Good Simulator project where he is in charge of product and technology development. In his day job, he is also a Data Scientists at Education First working on cutting-edge AI for marketing problems. He is passionate about applying AI to solve some of the biggest societal problems. Last summer, he was working as a summer data science for a social good fellow at Alan Turing Institute with the World Bank Group on developing new techniques in uncovering patterns of corruption in the public sector.
