About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Join us for the UK premiere of the groundbreaking short film Data Shadows; where art, science, and philosophy converge. Co-directed by philosopher and data scientist Sabina Leonelli, visionary artist Jacob van der Beugel, and filmmaker Oliver Page, this 20-minute cinematic journey transforms our understanding of data through the lens of nature; soils, stones, and plants. With stunning visuals and an innovative narrative, Data Shadows invites audiences to explore the unseen dimensions of data, turning abstract processes into tangible imagery and unraveling its lifecycle from extraction to transformation.

As the film unveils data’s tangible roots, it raises crucial questions about its ethical and environmental implications. Each chapter—Extraction, Repository, and Journeys—immerses viewers in a thought-provoking exploration of data’s hidden realities. Prepare to be captivated and inspired, as this film challenges conventional perceptions and sparks meaningful conversations about our data-driven lives and the materiality of data.

The film screening will be followed by a topical panel discussion and the opportunity to put your questions to Jacob, the artist behind the concept.
