How is visualisation of information used in criminal courts in deciding on guilt and criminal responsibility? Participate in role-play during a mock trial, learn through our interactive presentations and ask questions from an expert in a Q & A to get a behind-the-scenes insight.

The aim of this event is to present a behind-the-scenes insight into decision-making in criminal courts, using interactive data visualisation. The way that information is presented has a significant effect on the conclusions people draw, and nowhere is this more important than in the context of the criminal trial and jurors’ decision-making on questions of guilt and criminal responsibility. To bring insights on the functions and consequences of data visualisation in the criminal trial context, this one-day event will engage laypeople in an interactive presentation, role-play, and a debriefing and Q & A session. The day will be organised as follows:
• Multimedia presentation on decision-making, criminal trials and evidence, and the role of data visualisation in this process.
• Role-play activities: attendees will have an opportunity to act as jurors and make decisions on the basis of visual presentation of evidence in a court-like setting
• During the lunch break, the organisers will analyse the outcome and responses from the role-play
• The day will conclude with a presentation of the responses and their meaning to the participants, followed by a Q & A.
