Decarbonising Heritage Estates: Engineering Pathways to Practical Net Zero

This session explores practical engineering approaches for decarbonising heritage estates.

It will cover how overheating analysis informs passive interventions, climate resilience and system sizing; how stepped decarbonisation pathways can be sequenced around estate planning and existing MEP limitations; and how ASHP‑based solutions can be integrated within legacy systems despite acoustic, spatial and control challenges. The talk also examines stepped control strategies—flow‑temperature optimisation and hybrid operating modes.

Vasilis Maroulas is a Chartered Engineer and Associate Director with over 24 years of experience delivering complex capital programmes for cultural, heritage, and academic institutions. His expertise lies in heritage buildings, where he has led multi-disciplinary teams through strategic planning, design, and delivery—often in live operational environments that demand precision and collaboration. In this session he will take us through a number of his heritage projects.
