Yet, more than 150 years after his death, several texts in Dickens’s hand remain unread. This is because the author taught himself an obscure and complicated system of shorthand, adapting the rules and inventing new symbols as he went along. Our ‘Decoding Dickens’ workshops reflect upon recent breakthroughs made by the public in deciphering Dickens’s shorthand – and equip participants with everything that they need to become Dickens Decoders!Come along to this in-person workshop if you are a retiree interested in Dickens, puzzles, word games, or code-breaking. We’re particularly keen to involve people who have had previous shorthand training (in any system), even if you haven’t used this skill for many years.In the session you’ll find out more about the shorthand system that Dickens used and why it is so difficult to decode, before tackling a real Dickens shorthand manuscript. There will also be time to share your own experiences of learning shorthand – how do these compare with the ‘sea of perplexity’ that Dickens found himself in as a shorthand novice?
