About this event
Decolonising STEM: A Dual Perspective
Date: Monday 24th June 2024.
Time: 12-1pm.
Location: Online via Zoom.
Event type: Talk.
Theme: Decolonising education.
About:
In response to longstanding inequities within STEM education, this workshop addresses the pressing need to decolonise pedagogy and redefine the purpose of STEM fields. The content of the workshop is based on a journal publication we are writing that seeks to address decolonisation from a dual perspective. First, exploring inclusive educational practices aimed at fostering belonging and mitigating degree award gaps. Secondly, critically reviewing the purpose of STEM education, exploring ethical considerations regarding the militarisation of curricula and the imperative for sustainability through concepts like "fossil-free" education. By intertwining pedagogy and purpose, our workshop invites educators to take a holistic approach to decolonising STEM education, emphasising the interconnectedness of inclusive pedagogies and the ethical imperative to address pressing global challenges within the curriculum from a decolonial perspective.
Speaker(s):
Sean Porter - Senior Educator Developer (Transformative Education) University of Exeter, and EdD research student University of Sheffield.
