Deep End: Workshops

Hammersmith and Fulham Training Hub

This series of workshops explores challenges faced by those working in deprived communities and  focuses on practical ways to effect change

In 2009 a group of GPs working in deprived parts of Glasgow convened a conference and set out to explore how they could work together to address the issues they and their patients faced. As a result, they established the ‘<a href="https://www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/healthwellbeing/research/generalpractice/deepend/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">GPs at the Deep End</a>’ program. This has increased workforce resilience, improved connections with community services, and addressed learning needs relating to deprivation specific problems in primary care. Since 2019 Hammersmith &amp; Fulham Training Hub have run a version of this program for NW London. Workshops follow a curriculum and explore evidence relating to each topic. They provide a chance for participants to meet, share common challenges and perspectives, and focus on practical solutions that can be implemented at grass roots level. They cover the following topics:<ol><li>Understanding complexity: life in the &#x27;deep end&#x27; (Nov 10th)</li><li>The power of consultations: the impact of empathy (Nov 17th)</li><li>Understanding vulnerability: domains of resilience (Dec 1st)</li><li>Understanding dependence: creation of demand (Dec 15th)</li><li>Self-care and wellness: rational choice &amp; agency (Jan 5th)</li><li>Access and candidacy: literacy &amp; digital exclusion (Jan 19th)</li><li>Promoting continuity: the value of narrative (Feb 2nd)</li><li>Mental health and wellbeing: &#x27;depression&#x27; &amp; loneliness (Feb 23rd)</li><li>Advocacy: power, privilege, status &amp; passivity (Mar 8th)</li><li>Financial wellbeing: social capital &amp; resilience (Mar 22nd)</li><li>Food poverty: the social gradient to diabetes &amp; obesity (Apr 26th)</li><li>Living in pain: pain as the expression of social distress (May 17th)</li><li>Trauma informed care: cycles of adverse experiences(Jun 7th)</li><li>End of life care: dying in poverty &amp; compassion (Jun 21st)</li><li>Data and research: community participatory research (Jul 5th)</li><li>Peer support: communities &amp; professional resilience (Jul 19th)</li></ol>Sessions will all be online and are open to clinical and non-clinical staff from across health, social care and the voluntary sector.
