Workshops  to learn more about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in embodied AI, together with experts, artists, academics, and associations

We are delighted to inform you that the project DEI4EmbodiedAI is officially starting. What is the project about. It’s a Dutch collaboration (4TU) that aims to critique the existing problematic norms and provide tangible resources for practicing DEI when developing embodied AI by nurturing a DEI network among academics and societal partners. We organize a series of online or hybrid workshops (depending on Covid-19 measures) to raise awareness, assess practices and the future of our ways of working. Workshops in the fall of 2021: DEI4EAI and Gender 15/9/2021DEI4EAI and Ableism Early November 2021 TBADEI4EAI and Race Early November 2021 TBADEI4EAI and Design Methods Late November TBADEI4EAI Final Event December 2021 TBADiscern narrative, analyze status quo, define future ways of working to tackle DEI in Embodied AI. Open, Inclusive, Hands-On and Critical. Who are we. We are a research collective coming from various disciplines, cultures and gender identities working in the development, evaluation and policy geared towards more diverse and inclusive embodied AI. We believe inequity starts in the ideation process and continues at all levels of the development and deployment. The societal structures of privilege and power around the development of embodied AI play an over and covert role in the development process which extend in the everyday use of the technology by people with striking effects. Why Diversity Equity and Inclusion? Designers, researchers, and stakeholders, all, have the responsibility to reflect about the values, perspectives, biases and stereotypes they embed in embodied AI technology. There is the need to inspect narratives, practices and methods with reflexivity and openness to shift mindsets. All those things dubbed as ordinary are so cultural as they embody values, beliefs and narratives that influence how we collect and use data, how we craft algorithms, how we define agency, how we mold AI embodiment, how we design interaction and how we define embodied AI interventions. Social Justice and Science. Any community hoping to eliminate the above must sustain attention, resources, and effort toward meaningful change. In addition, change in the name of social justice is not the only reason to adopt DEI practices. A field that does not embrace DEI cannot make scientifically accurate claims about the efficacy of their object of study once it is embedded in society. Our position. We want to take action as academics, aware of the privileged role and powerful role that we have: We come from different positions of privilege and marginalization. We have had a range of experiences navigating issues related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Our experiences and outlooks cannot and do not represent everyone who shares a particular identity. We hope to engage in a meaningful conversation with the embodied AI community at large: listening and co-creating in a spirit of reflexivity.
