Depicting Donbas

Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre is a space in which theatre makers, critics and audiences gather to share knowledge, ideas and practices relating to contemporary theatre and performance.  We host an extensive programme of public events including workshops, seminars, lectures, symposia and performances. Our events are led by the research interests of Centre members and the current concerns of its Fellows and visiting artists.

Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre

On Thursday 25 and Friday 26 April 2019, we host Depicting Donbas: Creative and critical responses to the war in Ukraine. Depicting Donbas is a series of three events over two days exploring how artists across genres are responding to the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.
On Thursday 25 April from 6-7:30pm we host Ukrainian writers Iryna Shuvalova, Iryna Starovoyt, and Olena Styazhkina for a reading and discussion of their works. The reading will take place at <A HREF="https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ssees/ucl-school-slavonic-and-east-european-studies-ssees" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies</A>. 
On Friday 26 April from 10am-4:45pm we hold a symposium at <A HREF="http://www.bbk.ac.uk/arts/contact-us" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Birkbeck School of Arts</A> featuring presentations and discussion with Ukrainian writers, theatre artists, photographers, filmmakers and academics on the role of creative practice during times of conflict. Following the symposium on 26 April from 7-9pm our <A HREF="http://www.bbk.ac.uk/contemporary-theatre/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Contemporary Theatre</A> presents a documentary theatre performance from Ukraine's Theatre of Displaced People written and performed by Alik Sardarian and Natalia Vorozhbyt, directed by Georg Genoux. 
The reading, the symposium, and the evening performance are all free and open to the public. Registration is required. Symposium participants will be given priority for attendance at the evening performance on 26 April. Separate tickets for the performance will be released at a later date pending availability.
