In this full-day immersive workshop you'll learn how to design and create your own hand-block printed lampshade with textile designer and artist Olivia Brearley. In the session Olivia will guide you through the full process as you learn the fundamentals of block print and designing repeat patterns, how to carve your printing block and how to hand-block print! You will finish the session with your own unique handmade lampshade to take home. The workshop is suitable for both beginners and developers.


What you will learn in the session:


  • A breif history of block printing and how this form of printing came to be.
  • How to source inspiration and design a print intended for hand-block printing.
  • Different ways to make repeat patterns for hand-block printing.
  • How to transfer your design and carve it onto a lino-block tile.
  • Hand printing your design onto fabric and tips for printing onto other materials.
  • How to turn your hand-printed fabric into a lampshade ready to take home.
  • How to carry on developing this technique at home and the potentials of this beautiful form of printing!


More information about the day:

Please bring along some ideas or sources of inspiration for your design before the workshop (this could be pictures of flowers, objects, pets!) Olivia will bring along with her some books and other sources of imagery should you need some help with inspiration on the day. All materials and equipment will be provided for you on the day.

A light lunch is included in the price of your ticket and is provided by the famous Cobbles & Clay Cafe. Refreshments and nibbles will also be available throughout the day, please email oliviabprint@gmail.com with any dietary requirments / allergies when you have booked your ticket!


About the space:

The Classroom by Cobbles & Clay is a beautiful workshop space situated on Main Street in Haworth. Haworth is a popular destination that's famous for it's links to the Bronte sisters, and Main Street with it's picturesque views and it's gorgeous historical feel.


About the artist:

Olivia is a local textile designer, printmaker and ceramicist. She studied Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design at Leeds Arts University and has since gone on to run her own creative design business, specialising in creating in craft-led, intricate and handmade designs and products. Olivia worked for a number of years as a creative arts technician and creative workshop / studio assistant, which has underpinned her love of sharing her creative knowledge and helping others discover their creative potential.
