The Rylands Lunchtime Seminar Series

University of Manchester academics present new research on the special collections in conversation with curatorial colleagues from the Rylands. Each seminar will feature a presentation, a “show and tell” of select archival objects, and an audience Q&A.

Join us for a fascinating lunchtime seminar, delving into the wondrous world of Dante Alighieri. Every material instance of a text reveals a multitude of design and presentation choices in its expressive forms. In this collaborative presentation, to accompany the Rylands exhibition 'Designing Dante', curated by Guyda Armstrong (24 March - 1 October 2022), Guyda and John Hodgson (Associate Director: Curatorial Practices at the Rylands) will discuss three iconic Dante items from the collections: a fourteenth-century illuminated verse manuscript (Italian MS 1); a fifteenth-century commented manuscript containing the poem alongside other texts (Italian MS 49), and a copy of the 1477 Venice edition of the poem, the first printed edition to include supplementary material, including Boccaccio's life of the poet and a commentary.
