The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design (HHCD) is a globally recognised centre of excellence with a 34-year history of applying inclusive design to improve life. The HHCD applies the frameworks, methods, tools, and processes of inclusive and people-centred design to ensure that the needs, requirements and aspirations of key stakeholder and audience groups are included throughout the entire chain of solutions finding and realisation. To date, the HHCD has worked with over 200 clients from business, government and the voluntary sector and has a track record of nearly 300 projects that bring people-centred innovation strategies to products, services, technologies, and experiences. Our work is divided into two Research Areas – Age & Diversity and Healthcare, and two Impact Areas – Inclusive Design for Business Impact and Inclusive Design for Social Impact. The HHCD is the largest and longest-running design research centre of the Royal College of Art (RCA). The RCA was established in1837 and in1967was granted Royal Charter and University status. It is a wholly postgraduate university institution of art and design, offering MA, MPhil and PhD degrees, and to this day, remains the world’s leading university for art and design (2024 QS Ranking for the tenth consecutive year).

Design’s role in shaping and sharing wisdom across all ages

What is wisdom? How does it impact us as a society and as individuals? Should we design with wisdom in mind?This conversation will investigate the intersection of wisdom, age, and design. Join Dr Dilip Jeste, a world leading expert on wisdom and author of the book Wiser: The Scientific Roots of Wisdom, Compassion, and What Makes Us Good, and Design Age Institute Director Colum Lowe for a conversation facilitated by DAI Knowledge Exchange Fellow Carly Dickson.  “Wisdom not shared is wisdom not gained but lost” — Dilip JesteThe panel will explore if and how sharing people's unique and diverse experiences of getting older can help us design a world that works better for everyone. Jeste’s research identified that there is an inverse relationship between wisdom and loneliness - the wiser we are, the less lonely we are. Using this as the starting point, the panel will consider what role design can play in supporting the exchange of wisdom between people of different ages and whether this could simultaneously contribute to combating loneliness, ageism, and generational divides.Research by the Design Age Institute (DAI)'s partners at the International Longevity Centre UK (ILC) suggests that older people spend less money even though they’re saving more, regardless of income. The DAI and ILC recent joint report Money well spent? showed that this is often related to lack of access, but findings also suggest that in some cases we may simply be spending less due to preference and lack of desirable options. Maybe, as we age, we simply become wiser consumers and users. Is industry taking this into account? Perhaps a greater understanding of wisdom can help designers create more inclusive and desirable products, services and environments, which would stand to benefit not only the health and happiness of elderly individuals, but also society as a whole. _﻿___________Chair: Carly Dickson, Knowledge Exchange Fellow, Design Age Institute Colum Lowe, Director, Design Age Institute Dilip V. Jeste, M.D. is Director of the Global Research Network on Social Determinants of Mental Health and Exposomics, President-Elect of the World Federation for Psychotherapy, and Editor-in-Chief of the International Psychogeriatrics. He is Former Senior Associate Dean for Healthy Aging and Senior Care and Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at University of California San Diego. He obtained his medical education in India. In the US, he completed psychiatry residency at Cornell, and Neurology residency at George Washington University. He was a research fellow, and later, Unit Chief at the National Institute of Mental Health before joining UC San Diego where he worked for 36 years. Dr. Jeste has been Principal Investigator on a number of research and training grants. His main areas of research include schizophrenia, neuropsychiatric interventions, healthy aging, and wisdom. He has published 15 books, including “Wiser”, “Positive Psychiatry”, and “Successful Cognitive and Emotional Aging”, and over 750 peer-reviewed journal articles. He is Past President of the American Psychiatric Association and American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, and was a member of the NIMH Advisory Council and NIH Council of Councils. He was listed in “The Best Doctors in America” and in the Institute of Scientific Information list of the “world's most cited authors”. Dr. Jeste has received many awards from national and international organizations and universities. He has been a TEDMED speaker. His work has been cited in major media outlets.
