About Call for Code

Mitigating natural disasters is one of the world’s greatest challenges. The past decade has been one of the worst periods for natural disasters and while weather events may be inevitable they don’t have to become so catastrophic.

That’s why IBM has launched Call for Code, a worldwide, multi-year initiative that inspires developers to solve pressing global problems with sustainable software solutions.

Create applications that improve disaster preparedness, build resilient communities, and safeguard the health and well-being of individuals and institutions.

The most impactful project will be implemented with the help of IBM, The Linux Foundation, UN Human Rights, and American Red Cross.

Prizes
The winner of the inaugural Call for Code Global Award will receive:

The Call for Code Global Award presented by a jury of eminent technologists at the Call for Code Award Event.
A $200,000 USD cash prize.
Long-term open source project support from The Linux Foundation.
Venture capitalist introduction and pitch to turn your idea into a funded company.
The opportunity to deploy your solution with an IBM Corporate Service Corps team.

About the lectures:

Topic:

Omer Arad (Smart Wearable and IoT Solutions at IBM Haifa Research Lab) - The future of assistive technology in a scenario of natural disasters.

Subject:

In this talk, we will discuss the Social Disaster project - using P2P networking on mobile phones in case of a natural disaster. How can we use a mesh network of mobile phones in order to create an offline support network with the ability to help people communicate even if there is no cellular service? Using Watson services, we can add more layers of prediction and help the rescue teams improve their efficiency.

Topic:

Dr. Asaf Adi (IoT and Wearables at IBM Haifa Research Lab) - Saving lives at work with IoT.

Subject:

Safety first, right? That’s a given, but even so, did you know that according to the International Labor Organization every 15 seconds, 151 workers have a work-related accident? The global number of non-fatal occupational accidents reaches a staggering 317 million, annually. Clearly, work accidents remain a huge, cross-industry problem, despite safety regulations and procedures. In this session we will discuss how IoT is transforming Safety at Work by gathering data from all kinds of wearable and environmental sensors, and alerting workers and safety officers when danger is imminent.
