Developing a communications and impact strategy for your research

The Global Development Research Group is a multi-disciplinary and multi-national group of researchers who share a desire to better understand the world in order to achieve progressive social change.We undertake research in most developing regions of the world and make linkages to issues of poverty, inequality and oppression in the so-called developed world. There is some emphasis on conflict-affected and post-conflict societies, though not exclusively.We examine various structural inequalities such as those based on gender and class, and on access to health, education and natural resources.  We are interested in how people, especially those from oppressed and marginalised groups, organise and mobilise against such inequalities and unjust power relations in their struggles for human rights and democracy. Such interests are reflected in our own research approaches and methods, for instance, an engagement in action research and the co-production of knowledge with research participants, aiming to achieve practical applications of our findings in socially transformative ways.Current interests include critical enquiries into whether, and if so how, the Sustainable Development Goals can be achieved, focusing on SDG 10 on ‘reduced inequalities’ and SDG 16 on ‘promoting peaceful and inclusive societies’.

Global Development Research Group at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (CTPSR)

This workshop will guide postgraduate researchers to develop a communications and impact strategy for their research. The focus will be on varied and innovative ways of communicating research with audiences and stakeholders outside of academia. The workshop will include case studies and examples from external speakers, followed by group discussion and time to draft your own strategy and seek feedback from your peers. 
Speakers on the day include researchers working with indigenous communities, international NGOs and policymakers, and we will hear from international development charity <A HREF="http://www.inasp.info/en/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">INASP</A> on developing Policy Influence Plans:
INASP works with a global network of partners in Africa, Latin America and Asia. In line with their vision of research and knowledge at the heart of development, they work to support individuals and institutions to produce, share and use research and knowledge, which can transform lives. They focus on key areas of the research communication cycle, such as: Availability and access to research publications; Improving quality of research publications and communication; Building demand for research information; Supporting evidence informed policy making; Strengthening research and knowledge networks; and Sharing learning and best practice.
The workshop is open to all postgraduate researchers, but is primarily designed for Masters and PhD students from Geography (Physical and Human), International Development and Social Science backgrounds.
