Explore why Pupil Voice matters and how some schools are giving pupils the opportunity to influence their learning through the arts.

Student school councils and pupil subject ambassadors are now familiar in many schools. But how do you ensure that all pupils have a voice in their school community and the opportunity to influence aspects of their experience as a community member?Demonstrating the inclusion of genuine and authentic Pupil Voice is also an Artsmark criteria and, as contributor to pupils’ Personal Development, supports Ofsted’s expectations. This event will reflect on why giving children and young people a voice in their schools is so important and share examples of practice and impact from across the south east region.Our keynote speaker is Jonathan Harris. Jonathan is Head of Academy Music at The Premier Academy in Milton Keynes. The academy is currently on their second Artsmark journey, having attained Gold in 2020, and is a lead school in one of Artswork’s Creativity Champion’s programmes. As part of this programme, Jonathan wrote a <a href="https://artswork.org.uk/resources/developing-and-embedding-pupil-voice-in-schools-and-education-settings/?_sft_work_with=schools-education-setting" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">resource </a>reflecting on pupil agency and the value of learners having a voice in shaping arts provision and curricula in schools. He will share research and examples of both primary and secondary focused practice.He will be joined by colleagues from three settings from across the south east who will share their experiences and approaches.Mhari Smith, Queens Park Primary School, Brighton. Queen's Park have an embedded structure for pupil voice. The Art Council is made up of children from KS1 and 2, and these children look at the overall strategy for creativity, discuss at what is going well, and what needs improving. In addition, Art Ambassadors 'skill share' with their peers, staff and outside agencies. These children take responsibility for creating and planning for clubs, events and initiatives.Jo Mosely, Brighton Aldridge Community Academy. BACA have an established student leadership structure that enables students to have a say in academy life. They offer a range of roles and responsibilities to the student population through which they can promote active citizenship, develop staff and student relationships and communications, widen student engagement and contribute to whole-school improvement.We look forward to welcoming you. You do not need to have a Zoom account to take part in this webinar, but you will need access to a computer or smartphone that has video capabilities. Please note this event will be recorded. This event has been developed for school educational settings in the South East Bridge region. Places are limited and we request schools/organisations make no more than two bookings per school/organisation. However, multiple colleagues are welcome to join from a single device.
