Always wanted to write a novel? Have a million ideas but no idea where to start? Let this course be your guide and watch your story unfold.

The first part of Orwrite's 1 Year Novel programme, this eight week in-person course will lead you through the fundamentals of story, developing the seed of your idea and helping you to map out your novel. Through guided sessions, you’ll explore your world, build a cast of characters and plot your novel’s journey, creating the foundation you need to return to the beginning and write your first scene.

After this course: Graduate to the sixteen week Novel Builder course or give one of our other short courses a try.

What we'll cover:

  • The fundamentals of storytelling: plot, character, worldbuilding, theme and genre
  • Story management: helping you set your own story goals and hitting them
  • Publishing norms and standards: considering the different options and how industry expectations might shape story development
  • Craft development: developing writing practices that work for you


What you'll need:

  • Just yourself. Everything will be provided, although bring you're welcome to bring your own pen, notebook, laptop if you prefer.
