Devonian Forests, Dr Cris Berry, University of Cardiff

Over the past 30 years much information has come to light about the nature of the Earth’s first forest ecosystems. The new evidence has come from both exceptionally preserved fossils, allowing the first accurate reconstructions of early forest trees, and from ‘fossil forests’, which allow entire ecosystems to be visualised. Examples will be developed from Germany, New York and Svalbard to reveal a completely new understanding of the transition to a forested planet.

The Bath Geological Society was founded in 1970 and serves the interests of amateur and professional geologists alike. The Society meets at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute on Queens Square on the first Thursday of the month. A series of lectures covering all aspects of geology are held 10 times per year. A series of field trips is also offered. We have around 80 enthusiastic members. A monthly newsletter is written by members covering topics such as unusual rocks, minerals or fossils found on field trips, reminiscences and short research articles. An annual electronic Journal is produced by members. The Society welcomes new members and annual fees are £30.00 or £15.00 for students.https://bathgeolsoc.org.uk/lectures/
