The Common Room is a charity formed in 2017 to restore the Grade II* listed Neville Hall in Newcastle upon Tyne (home to The Mining Institute since 1872), and its significantarchive and collectionsdocumenting centuries of engineering, mining and wider scientific innovation.Thanks to National Lottery players, an £8.9m grant has enabled us to spend over £7 million restoring the building, and around £2m to support our running costs, preserve ourcollections, and to drive our mission: to use our unique heritage to inspire the next generation of innovators and engineers. We do this by running a range ofeventsandprogrammesfor the public, families, schools and industry, celebrating the North East's industrial past and present, and looking towards our future.The Common Room is also available forhire for private events, includingconferences,lectures,weddingsandgigs, and is complete with its own cafe bar,5|Quarter.

The Common Room are thrilled to be hosting ‘Digging Deep: Coal Miners of African Caribbean Heritage &amp; The North East’ from Saturday 25th September to Monday 1st November. Join us on Friday 1st October, and hear from the exhibition curator, Norma Gregory, about the origins, challenges, process, journey and future legacy of Digging Deep.The Digging Deep exhibition reveals personal narratives, memories and creative representations of former coal miners of Black/African-Caribbean heritage and other diverse groups within UK mining history, including the North East. Visitors can expect to see portraits, poetry and more, which draw their attention to the diversity of our once prestigious mining industry, in contrast to the typical narratives surrounding the industry and its communities.Event timingsArrival between 6:30pm and 6:55pmTalk begins at 7pm, followed by a Q&amp;A session.Event close at 9pmBooking informationTickets are free but booking is required to reserve your space.Additional informationLocation: Wood Hall, The Common Room, Westgate Road, Newcastle NE1 1SEChildren must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult.Hand sanitiser will be supplied.
