Digging into our past: Glencoe family dig-for-a-day event

Welcome to our exciting event where families can get hands-on with history! Join us at the Achnacon, Glencoe for a day of digging into the past. Uncover hidden stories, learn about archaeology, and have fun exploring together. This in-person event is perfect for families looking for a unique adventure. Don't miss out on this opportunity to make memories and discover the secrets of Glencoe's history!

On Saturday 28th June we invite you to join us on site for our dig-for-a-day event for a chance to get hands on with the archaeology of Glencoe. We are looking for volunteers to join us on site for a day of test pitting to investigate a large garden plot within the settlement. Volunteers of all ages are welcome (those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult).

For more info on the dig for a day event - and other opportunities to get involved check out our website:

Participants should bring:

  • A packed lunch and plenty of water (digging can be hot work!)
  • Clothes for working in warm weather
  • Layers including waterproofs (Scottish weather can change!)
  • Sun screen
  • Sensible footware (wellies, walking boots - shoes with good grip - archaeology is muddy work)

Our site should be accessed by parking at the NTS visitor centre and walking (East) up the Glen via the Glencoe Greenway path. The site is approximately 15 minutes on foot from the Glencoe Visitor Centre, or a 5 minute bike ride. If you have concerns about accessing the site get in touch with the organisers!

Please do not try to park at the NTS Achnacon property, or off the private track to Gleann Leac-na-Muidhe as parking here may block emergency access to our site and other properties.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring?

Apart from yourself, sensible footware and clothes for working outside, and lunch - Nothing!

What is archaeology like?

Archaeology is a fun and social way to explore the past - as well as being an important aspect of research into past societies. Archaeology can be physically demanding - but on site there is something for all levels of fitness, strength and accessibility.
