Dr Michael Kwet will discuss digital colonialism as part of the UCL Critical Digital Studies Reading Group at UCL

<a href="https://law.yale.edu/mike-kwet" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr. Michael Kwet</a> will discuss digital colonialism, exploring moral and geopolitical dilemmas relating to digital infrastructures and the global digital economy. Following his lecture, there will be an audience Q-and-A. Kwet received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Rhodes University and is a Visiting Fellow of the Information Society Project at Yale Law School. He is the author of “Digital Colonialism: US empire and the new imperialism in the Global South, host of the Tech Empire podcast, and editor of the forthcoming volume, The Cambridge Handbook of Race and Surveillance due out in 2021 on Cambridge University Press. Dr. Kwet has been published at numerous outlets, including The New York Times, Al Jazeera, The Intercept, VICE News, Wired, Counterpunch, and ROAR Magazine, and he works on activist campaigns to resist digital colonialism.Attendees can participate online via Zoom (link will be circulated after registration).Following Dr. Kwet’s Zoom talk, the Critical Digital Studies (CDS) Reading Group series will be exploring Kwet’s piece, “<a href="https://longreads.tni.org/digital-colonialism-the-evolution-of-us-empire" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Digital Colonialism: The evolution of US empire</a>”, featured in ROAR Magazine. An optional reading by Kwet includes “<a href="https://doi.org/10.1177/0306396818823172" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Digital Colonialism: US empire and the new imperialism in the Global South</a>” featured in Race &amp; Class, an academic journal.
