Digital Mapping

Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR) represents25 Mountain Rescue Teams(MRTs) made up of highly trained volunteers who are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to emergencies and carry out a specialist search and rescue service in the mountains and remote communities in Scotland to keep people safe and help people if and when they get into difficulty.

Team members will acquire knowledge on how to integrate the SMR mapping software (Mountain Map) with search management techniques.

IntroductionThis course enables attendees to get practical hands on use with the software and use it in practical skills workshops and searched based scenarios alongside the Search Management Course. Even if Mountain Map is not used by your team, the 3 R’s principle of Record, Retain and Retrieve which is the basis of the course will still be relevant.Course aimTo introduce attendees to the knowledge and skill required to use digital mapping software to assist in the search of missing persons.Course objectivesBy the end of the course, attendees will be able to;<ul><li>Describe the reasons behind having a process for the management of a search for missing persons</li><li>Describe the process used to manage a search for missing persons</li><li>Describe the requirements for gathering information for a missing persons search</li><li>Identify systems and screens</li><li>Demonstrate how to open, save and close</li><li>Demonstrate how to use symbols, lines and polygons</li><li>Demonstrate how to create local information</li><li>Demonstrate the use of filters and layers</li><li>Describe and demonstrate the use of Mountain Map and SARCALL and PhoneFind</li><li>Describe how to perform a web based search</li><li>Describe how mobile phone data is interpreted and used.</li></ul>DurationCourse starts 19:00 on the Friday evening and finishes 15:30 on the Sunday. Accommodation is available from Friday evening.Please note that there is no meal provided at the hotel on the Friday evening.StandardsBy the end of the course, students should satisfy the Instructor, that they have achieved all of the course objectives.AccreditationThe course will not be accredited.AssessmentThere is no formal assessment.Pre-course requirementsAn experienced, computer literate team member with an interest in digital mapping. For insurance purposes, attendees are required to sign on with their team prior to attendance.Instructor ratioThe Instructor to student ratio will be set at 1:6AccommodationThe course will take place at Stirling Court Hotel, University of Stirling, Airthrey Rd, Stirling FK9 4LAAccommodation will be available from Friday for two nights in single, en-suite rooms.

What to bringPlease bring a laptop with Mountain Map pre-installed. If this is not possible please bring a Windows laptop so the software can be installed on the Friday evening (software install takes approx. 1 hour so this needs to happen on the Friday as opposed to Saturday morning)Please don&#x27;t forget to bring face masks for each day of the course, hand sanitiser, notepad and pen, as well as any personal medications.Outdoor clothing
