Keywords in Technology and Society is the 2021 Speaker Series for the University of Surrey’s cutting-edge research theme – Technology and Society. Through 9 editions in 2021, we will bring to you highlights of Surrey research across our three faculties, and 2 editions hosting external experts. Each of the 9 editions will focus us on one key word in technology and society – and we look forward to having you join us!

Speakers:Sonia Livingstone - Sonia Livingstone DPhil (Oxon), OBE, FBA, FBPS, FAcSS, FRSA, is a professor in the Department of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Taking a comparative, critical and contextualised approach, her research examines how the changing conditions of mediation are reshaping everyday practices and possibilities for action. Much of Sonia’s time these days is concerned with Children’s Rights in the Digital Age. Sonia has published 20 books on media audiences, especially children and young people’s risks and opportunities, media literacy and rights in the digital environment.Chair:Emily Setty - Emily graduated with a PhD in 2018 entitled 'Sexting ethics in youth digital culture: Risk, shame and the negotiation of privacy and consent' - a qualitative exploration of young people's experiences of risk and harm in their sexting cultures. Emily's primary research interests concern young people's behaviours and experiences within their youth sexual and relational cultures. Emily is a member of the following research groups: 'Digital Societies', 'Sex, Gender and Sexualities' and 'Criminology'.
