This workshop will be a practical introduction to digital scholarly editing with TextLab. TextLab is a web-based application that matches transcriptions of manuscripts in TEI-XML to the manuscript images, in effect creating a one-to-one correspondence between word and image. It also allows users to annotate textual variations with “revision narratives”. This will be demonstrated with one of the John Rylands Library’s very own (and newly digitised) manuscript collections. The workshop will begin with an introduction to TextLab and after a break for lunch (provided), there will be a two hour practical workshop, concluding with a round-up and 'next steps'.

No experience with programming languages or XML is necessary. Laptop required.

Trainer: Dr Christopher Ohge. Christopher is Lecturer in Digital Approaches to Literature at the Institute of English Studies, University of London. For nearly a decade he has contributed to several print and digital editing projects, including the Mark Twain Papers, Melville’s Marginalia Online, and the Melville Electronic Library, for which he is currently co-editing a digital edition of Billy Budd, Sailor. His published work has appeared in Scholarly Editing, Critical Insights: Billy Budd, Sailor, Literary Imagination, Notes & Queries, and Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies.
