Building Belonging: Disability and Culture

An online discussion for all where you can hear about the lived experiences of disabled staff in the workplace.

<p>In this University of Oxford, inter-departmental and cross-divisional seminar, panellists will consider how ableism has impacted their career progression, how to discuss disabilities in the workplace, and tips to support disabled colleagues.  There will be an opportunity to ask questions.</p><p>The session will be chaired by Emily Hotine (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences) who will be joined by three speakers:</p><ul><li>Marie Tidball</li><li>Jasleen Jolly</li><li>Daniel Holloway</li></ul><h2>Speaker Biographies</h2><h3>Daniel Holloway - Head of Administration and Finance. Faculty of Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics, University of Oxford</h3><p>Dan Holloway is the Head of Administration and Finance at Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics and was a student in Oxford from 1989-2000. Dan was shortlisted for the 2018 Vice Chancellor’s Diversity Awards alongside Verity Westgate for the mental health training course they designed and delivered more than 30 times. Outside of Oxford, Dan has been campaigning on mental health issues for nearly two decades, is a frequent expert on governmental reviews, and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute. Dan specialises in neurodivergence and mental illness and creating more inclusive spaces within higher education and financial services. Dan was the winner of the 2017 Humanities Innovation Challenge for what would go on to become Rogue Interrobang, which became the second spinout from the Humanities Division. Rogue Interrobang helps individuals and institutions to use creative thinking to solve wicked problems, including helping as many people to flourish in the workplace as possible.</p><h3>Jasleen Jolly - Associate Professor at the Vision and Eye Research Institute, Anglia Ruskin University</h3><p>Dr Jasleen Jolly is a clinical academic combining multiple disciplines to provide a better understanding of how the visual system is affected by eye disease. Jasleen has used her own experiences of developing a lifechanging chronic illness to change her practice and improve interactions with patients as well as direct her research.</p><h3>Marie Tidball - Project Co-ordinator, The Oxford University Disability Law and Policy Project</h3><p>Dr Marie Tidball is a founding director and coordinator of the Oxford University Disability Law and Policy Project. She is a Research Associate at the Centre for Criminology and a Knowledge Exchange fellow at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities Centre (TORCH). Her academic interests concern the intersection between disability and society with a specific focus on the criminal justice system. In addition to her academic pursuits Marie has extensive experience of project managing award-wining campaigns aimed at driving disability inclusion within academia, civil society, and government.
