In celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, <a href="https://sikhassembly.org.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sikh Assembly</a> and <a href="https://www.asiandisabilitynetwork.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Asian Disability Network</a> invite you to join “Disability Discussions”, sharing the lived experience of disabled people and their families within the Sikh community. We recognise that all members of the Sikh community are seen as equal, yet disabled people within our community face barriers and bias, due to lack of knowledge, stigma and cultural awareness of disability. Join us as we hear from a range of panellists who have experienced disability first-hand from both an individual and parental perspective. Mandip won three Gold, one Silver, one Bronze at the IWRF European Championship he made his mark on team sport at the highest level. Doing so after the car crash which broke his neck and injured his spine represents incredible individual triumph. Manni retired from sport in 2016 after the birth of his daughter and is now driven to be the best father he can be. His passion is working with people; building connections and offering solutions. He visits schools to teach core values to young people and he firmly believes that if you do what you love, it won’t feel like work.Dr Jatinder Singh and Sarbit Kaur have been married for 25 years with 3 children. They are both passionate about raising awareness and changing attitudes on disability. Their youngest son was diagnosed with Down syndrome and Autism. He is at a mainstream school and thriving with his developmental and communication skills.Dr Jatinder Singh is a Principal Social Scientist working for the Environment Agency and has experience of working in climate change, sustainability issues and waste management. He has over 35 years’ experience of working in the voluntary sector including being a school governor, trustee of a Gurdwara Sahib, chair of South Asian Arts UK, co-chair of Sikh Alliance Yorkshire and has worked with various community, faith and public agencies on religious, cultural and social issues. Sarbjit Kaur is a community support worker for <a href="https://touchstonesupport.org.uk/community-services/sikh-elders-service/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sikh Elders Service</a> providing 1:1 support around mental health and wellbeing. Sarbjit facilitates group activities including exercises on Zoom and has produced infographics (in Punjabi) to help understand the government’s health advice and rationale for shielding during the Covid-19 pandemic. She has helped Sikh elders to use technology to reduce isolation and keep them connected. Before this role, Sarbjit worked for a charity supporting families with Down syndrome. Sarbjit is also an Independent Consultant (Kaur Communications) advising and supporting families and schools in relation to Education Health Plans and Special Educational Needs resources.Shani Kaur Dhanda is an award-winning disability specialist and social entrepreneur listed as one of the UK&#x27;s most influential disabled people. As a keynote speaker and practitioner for inclusion across business, government, non-profit and wider society, Shani helps organisations break barriers and integrate inclusion into their business frameworks. With her determination for creating everyday equality, Shani founded and leads three disruptive platforms all united by the common purpose of empowering underrepresented communities:1. <a href="https://www.diversabilitycard.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Diversability</a>, the world&#x27;s first inclusive platform for disabled people aimed at reducing the financial pressures from the unavoidable extra costs of living with a condition or impairment. 2. <a href="https://www.asianwomanfestival.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Asian Woman Festival</a>, the UK&#x27;s first-of-its-kind annual festival and global community smashing stereotypes to empower and celebrate Asian women.3. <a href="https://www.asiandisabilitynetwork.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Asian Disability Network</a>, an educational platform and support network for people who experience multiple types of stigma due to their ethnic and cultural identities.More InformationWe aim to create a safe and honest space at our events, for guests to speak honestly without the fear of repercussion.
