DISCOURSE: Value & Labour

Glasgow Institute of Architects

As part of ongoing consultations on the forthcoming RIAS 5-year Strategy Plan, the GIA Strategy Committee are facilitating a series of workshops under the umbrella title DISCOURSE: The Next Chapter.
This workshop will explore how the work of architects might better be valued and communicated, both in practice and within society at large. 
Underestimating the value of Architecture has a direct impact on us all. Squeezing project budgets, programme deadlines and consultants' fees inevitably leads to a poorer quality of building; and ultimately a poorer experience for the building user. The profession suffers from long working hours, stifled design talent and a lack of voice and leadership on large scale projects.
Currently, our industry is notorious for a lack of work/life balance, which could be attributed to a failure to set fair terms and conditions in appointments at all levels. Perhaps we undervalue and undermine ourselves. To all intents and purposes, everyone suffers when our value is not recognised or appreciated.
Does society at large place any value in the discipline of architecture? At best, it’s seen as a luxury service that only the rich can afford, and at worst a skillset that can be replicated by others. Can any value be measured, quantified and promoted? If so, by whom or through what channels?
This workshop is intended to facilitate a meaningful discussion where we can find solutions to help one another and improve standards for us all; not only in the wider built environment but also in our offices and home lives, too.
