Discover Indigo - a printing workshop

Join James Kail and George Fukuda of Bailiwick Blue for a hands-on exploration of one of the world’s most fascinating dye plants.

In this two-hour workshop, participants will experience indigo in two very different forms, learning how this remarkable plant can be transformed into both pigment and living colour.

Working with naturally derived materials, we will explore:

• Indigo Pigment Printing: Create unique botanical prints on paper using indigo pigment and plant materials. Participants will experiment with simple printing techniques using vegetation and food materials to create beautiful patterns and textures.

• Fresh Leaf Indigo on Silk: Experience the magic of freshly harvested indigo leaves. Participants will work with fresh indigo and create a silk bandana, observing the transformation as the colour develops through exposure to air. Fresh indigo leaves and salt are used as part of this traditional process.

Throughout the workshop we will discuss the history of indigo, how colour is produced from the plant, and the remarkable journey from leaf to blue.

The indigo used during the workshop has been grown in Guernsey by Bailiwick Blue, offering participants a unique opportunity to work directly with locally cultivated dye plants.

All materials are provided.

Participants will take home:

• One original indigo pigment print on paper

• One hand-dyed silk bandana created using fresh indigo leaves

Suitable for beginners. No previous experience is required.
