Discovering Tyburnia

Talking & Exploring was set up and is run by Joanna Dudzinska, a qualified tour guide, English teacher and local history enthusiast, to bring people together in order to explore various areas off the beaten tourist trail. The walks are mainly in the West London area, are usually not long, both in distance and time, and are as much about sharing information and perspectives as learning about what you are seeing, and making friends. Not the sort of place you would want to hang about in  in the past unless you were into executions but now a totally different experience!

Al Bustan restaurant

Meet at Al Bustan, a family restaurant, for a chill and chat, and a snack or brunch before a walk through the attractive area called Connaught Village, part of Hyde Park Estate in Tyburnia.The area called Tyburnia is remembered for the infamous gallows, an execution place near where Marble Arch is now.Do you know where to look for the plaque commemorating those who met their punishment by hanging?Did you know that The Tyburn is a river, now running under the streets and houses?Did you know that Marble Arch was moved from a more prestigious location?On our walk, we will look for the plaques commemorating important people who used to live here, appreciate the architecture, the shops, boutiques and galleries as well as the different residential projects incorporating greenery and artwork.We will talk about the different people who have come to live in this part of London over the centuries and refer to the old days before most of the rivers were culverted.Both the rich and poor will get a mention, including early Irish immigrants who lived in a shanty town where now the city flourishes.Would you like to hear about:<ul><li>a ballet dancer who wore a prototype of a tutu</li><li>an opera singer second only to Carusso</li><li>an atheist female writer from a family of missionaries</li><li>a Polish female artist and gallery owner</li><li>and more?</li></ul>After the walk, you can browse Connaught Street with its pretty boutiques and galleries at your leisure and then enjoy aromatic hot chocolate at London Chocolate or great coffee at Marcus.A few more things:Please remember, that it will cost £15 exact cash to join on the day.Pictures are taken during our walks and some of the walk may be recorded so please let us know if you do not want to be included.As it is a walking tour, please make sure you wear suitable footwear and clothing.You take part in our events at your own risk although we take all the precautions to assess the route prior to the walks.If you can no longer attend please cancel your ticket or notify us so we could offer your place to someone else.Please email us if you have any questions regarding the walk and check your mailbox before the walk.Feel welcome to contact us to arrange a bespoke tour for your group.We look forward to seeing you!
