Dis/Ordinary Spaces

Jos Boys has been involved in many projects that aim to think and 'do' dis/ability and architecture differently. Together with visually impaired artist Zoe Partington, she has been developing a collaborative platform since 2007, with the mission 'to promote activity that develops and captures models of new practice for the built environment, led by the creativity and experiences of disabled and Deaf artists.’ The Dis/Ordinary Architecture Project now has a network of about 25 artists, and is working with architectural students, educators and practitioners across the UK and internationally to jointly generate innovative ways of designing for our many different ways of being in the world.Jos is author of “Doing Disability Differently: Architecture, Dis/ability and Designing for Everyday Life”Routledge 2014,and editor of ReaderDisability, Space, Architecture: A Reader(Routledge 2017).

NOTE DATE CHANGE! NOW ON SATURDAY 17th MARCH. You are invited to Dis/Ordinary Spaces – a one-day conference exploring ways of doing disability differently, by imagining access and inclusion as creative generators, not merely as technical or legal ‘problems’ for architectural design.
This is a valuable opportunity for architectural students, practitioners and educators to engage with disability studies scholars, activists and artists; and to discuss exciting and innovative ways of designing for our many different ways of being in the world.
 The keynote speaker is renowned disability scholar Aimi Hamraie, whose most recent publication is Building Access: Universal Design and the Politics of Disability (2017).  Their talk is entitled “Critical Access Studies and Socio-Spatial Practice” and will challenge conventional modes of access-making related to disability, as well as suggesting how disability and access can act as a cultural critique, with implications for both design practice and built environment research.
 The day also includes presentations from Kim Kullman (Open University), Leo Care (Sheffield University School of Architecture), Professor Barbara Penner (Bartlett School of Architecture) and Dr. Jos Boys (The DisOrdinary Architecture Project) who will each critically explore  alternative models of design for access and inclusion. There will opportunities for discussion and debate.
 This event is a collaboration between the Bartlett and The DisOrdinary Architecture Project and is funded by Arts Council England and the Architecture Project Fund of the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Attendance is free, but places must be booked via Eventbrite – and you must bring a copy of your ticket with you.
 BSL interpretation will be provided. Parking is available nearby at Euston, where places can be reserved in advance.
