Representation during FtP is vital for better outcomes and a fairer process. Are expectations me?

We know that non represented nurses, midwives and nursing associates are likely to have poorer outcomes at FtP investigations than those who are represented. They are also less likely to engage in the process.However those joining our group have mixed experience of the representation given by their union and we wish to explore if this is due to unrealistic expectations or something else.We ask the questions:1. When joining a union what do nurses, midwives and nursing associates think they will get if under FtP2. Is the above expectation realistic3. How can the gap between the expectation and the reality be bridged.4. What needs to change?Panel Members1. Dave Dawes - Chair of Council for the RCN. He has a long history of being actively involved in the RCN, first serving on RCN Council as a nursing student almost 30 years ago. This is now his eighth year on RCN Council, having served in four different decades – the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. He is also Chair of the RCN North West Board and has served as a forum chair, branch officer and RCN Congress Agenda Committee member over the years. Most recently he has been the Honorary Treasurer of RCN Council. Dave is the Director of Possibilities of The Angelfish Community and a lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University. He has over 25 years’ experience in hospital and community care in both the NHS and in the independent sector and significant expertise in board and financial governance.2. Paul Golden - Independent Midwife Mediator &amp; Lecturer. Founder, Human Rights Action in Childbirth. Paul is a midwife and neonatal specialist working independently and in a variety of government hospitals in the EU UK NZ Australia Asia etc. Paul trained in law and mediation. He lectures on midwifery, law, human rights in childbirth globally3. Ian Hynes - CEO Intersol Global: Poor workplace investigations cost careers, livelihoods, and reputations, even lives. After a 30+ year career investigating serious and complex offences, Ian now applies those skills strategically as CEO of Intersol Global, a company training and qualifying, advising and conducting, workplace investigations and investigation meetings. Impartial, thorough, and fair workplace investigation case management sits at the very heart of his ethos4. Sue Allison: Whistleblower. Sue has supported radiographers under HCPC through the FtP process5. Mike Travis: Steward and safety rep. Member of RCN trade union committee. Past RCN council member
