Doctor Faustus
Marlowe’s tragedy about a doctor who makes a pact with the devil.
Christopher Marlowe’s famous tragedy, Doctor Faustus, was first performed around 1595, just a few years after the first translation into English of a medieval legend, about a doctor-turned-necromancer who makes a pact with the devil. Marlowe brilliantly examines Faustus’s grandiose, but ultimately futile, intellectual ambitions. This rehearsed reading featuring Michael Daviot as Faust, Susan Chynoweth as Mephisto, Tim Barrow as Wagner, with Felicity Cullen and Lizz Spence, is directed by Janet de Vigne. Tuesday 6-7pm pre-performance discussion in St John’s hosted by the Scottish Network for Religion and Literature.
